AutoTwister: Fully Automated Stir Bar Sorptive Extraction (SBSE) Workflows
Automate Your Twister® Workflow from Sample Preparation to GC-MS Analysis
AutoTwister combines GERSTEL’s proven Twister technology with the automation capabilities of the MultiPurpose Sampler (MPS) to deliver a fully automated Stir Bar Sorptive Extraction (SBSE) workflow.
From extraction and rinsing to drying and transfer for thermal desorption, AutoTwister eliminates manual handling steps, improves reproducibility, and increases laboratory throughput.
Designed for seamless integration with the GERSTEL Thermal Desorption Unit 2 (TDU 2), AutoTwister creates a streamlined path from extraction to analysis, enabling unattended operation and consistent analytical performance.
Why Automate SBSE?
Traditional SBSE workflows require multiple manual steps between extraction and analysis.
AutoTwister eliminates these processes through intelligent automation, helping laboratories improve productivity while maintaining confidence in analytical results.
Key Benefits
- Increased sample throughput
- Improved method reproducibility
- Greatly reduced hands-on analyst time
- Standardized sample preparation workflows
- Automated desorption and GC-MS analysis
- Improved laboratory efficiency
Ideal Applications
AutoTwister is well suited for laboratories seeking high-throughput, reproducible SBSE workflows in:
The combination of automation and Twister extraction technology helps laboratories increase productivity while maintaining analytical performance.
Complete Automation from Sample to Analysis
- Load sample vials onto the MPS tray.
- The sample vial is moved to the quickMIX 2 module.
- The chosen AutoTwister rod is inserted into the sample vial.
- Extraction is performed using controlled high-energy agitation in the quickMIX 2 with optional heating or cooling.
- Matrix residue is removed by a water rinse, followed by air drying to eliminate residual moisture in the combined wash-dry station.
- The MPS moves the AutoTwister rod directly to the TDU 2 for thermal desorption and GC-MS analysis or to the MPS tray for sample storage.
- Rods can be reconditioned and later run as blanks using the optional Online Conditioning Station (OCS)

Advanced Automation Hardware
quickMIX 2 Extraction Module
The quickMIX 2 module provides precise and reproducible extraction conditions to support robust SBSE workflows.
Features
- High-energy agitation (350 – 750 rpm)
- Optional heating (up to 80 °C)
- Optional cooling (down to 15 °C)
- Accurate temperature control during extraction
- Consistent and reproducible extraction conditions
Wash & Dry Station

The GERSTEL Wash & Dry Station automates post-extraction handling.
Benefits
- Automated removal of matrix residue
- Integrated air-drying technology
- Improved workflow efficiency
- Reduced water consumption
- Designed to help preserve analyte integrity during processing
Optional Online Conditioning Station (OCS)
- Recondition rods in the station, and not in the TDU 2
- Overlapping steps allow simultaneous conditioning and GC-MS analysis
- Rods can be automatically run as blanks after a sequence is completed
Flexible Rods
AutoTwister rods are available in both glass and metal formats, providing flexibility for a variety of applications and workflow requirements.
Sorbent Options
The available rod formats can be paired with the complete Twister sorbent portfolio to
support diverse analytical needs.
The sorbent phases provide options for polar, semi-polar, and non-polar compounds while maintaining the benefits of fully automated SBSE.
