AppNote 288: Determination of 2-Methylisoborneol and Geosmin from Corn Bins Using Twister® and TF-SPME Extraction GC-MS

Abstract

Off-odors in grain, particularly compounds like 2-methylisoborneol (MIB) and geosmin, can significantly compromise product quality by introducing undesirable musty or earthy notes in food and beverage products. Monitoring the grain before harvest and distribution to food and beverage manufacturers is essential to ensure the highest quality of raw materials. GERSTEL’s Thin Film Solid Phase Microextraction (TF-SPME) membranes and Twister® stir bars enable passive sampling of volatile compounds in the field. This study outlines a suitable methodology for extracting MIB and geosmin from corn bins and emphasizes its practicality and ease of use.
