The GERSTEL Tube Spiking Apparatus’ (TSA) primary purpose is to provide a means to accurately inject calibration standards onto thermal desorption tubes. It works by providing a heated, closed pathway for the calibration standards, in either the liquid or gas phase, to be injected into a heated stream of an inert gas such as nitrogen or helium. The calibration standards are vaporized in a glass expansion chamber and carried to the adsorbent tube. The flow through the tube is allowed to continue 3-5 minutes at 50 ml/min after sample injection to insure that all compounds have been completely transferred and any residual solvent eliminated. The tube is then removed and analyzed using the GERSTEL Thermal Desorption System.

In addition to injecting calibration standards onto adsorbent tubes, optional accessories are available that will allow users to perform purge & trap type sampling or create a dynamic humidified stream of the inert gas. The purge & trap module consists of special glassware for purging aqueous samples onto the adsorbent tube at ambient temperatures. A flow controller is provided that allows the user to independently set the purge (wet) and dry flow rates.
